Roles

Executive Sponsor

What Is a Executive Sponsor?

The Role

Sets the goals, funds the work, and decides who needs to be involved. Projects without an engaged sponsor stall the first time a hard decision or a budget question comes up.

What They Do

  • Sets the business goals the project has to meet.
  • Approves the budget and the timeline.
  • Decides which people and departments need to be involved.
  • Makes the final call when priorities or opinions conflict.
  • Signs off at each stage gate before the next one starts.

When It Matters

Every project needs a sponsor, but it matters most when the work crosses departments or changes how people do their jobs. Without someone with the authority to settle disagreements and protect the budget, projects stall the first time a hard trade-off comes up.

Who Fills It

Someone at your company with budget authority, usually the owner, founder, or a senior leader. On a company of a few people, this is often the person who first contacted us.

Where It Fits

  • Business process assessment
  • Stakeholder analysis
  • Phase: Before development
